I typically scoff at girls who wear makeup to the gym, but I wasn’t preparing for just any workout. I was getting ready for the Skinnygirl Tastemakers Cycling & Cocktails event with Bethenny Frankel herself.
Public transportation had failed me numerous times lately, leaving me trapped in a stalled subway car or sprinting off a bus and down several avenues. Tonight, I couldn’t risk being late, so I decided to walk from my Upper East Side home office, across Central Park, to the Upper West Side Flywheel.
I arrived with time to spare, checked in at the front desk, and beelined for the bathroom. I looked in the mirror and was horrified! I couldn’t meet Bethenny Frankel looking like this! While my 2.4-mile walk to the event allowed me to arrive on time, it did not allow me to maintain my fresh face and perfect ponytail. Fortunately, the Flywheel bathrooms are stocked with nearly every beauty product on the planet, and I was quickly able to regain my Bethenny-ready face.
Around this time my friend Kelly arrived, and we secured our place first in line outside the studio where Bethenny was doing a pre-workout interview. After waiting a few minutes, the door flew open, and Bethenny somehow slipped out in the sea of press. Kelly and I entered the studio and took two bikes in the back. Neither of us had been to a spin class, and we were certain we were about to have our butts beaten (literally). After everyone was in place, Bethenny made her grand entrance, gave a brief introduction, and then left us to suffer through the cycling alone!
Somehow I survived my first spin class, but I was certain my Bethenny-ready face had once again melted off from the sweat dripping down my brow. Outside the studio, Bethenny was ready and waiting for us with a cocktail in hand. She posed for photos, gave a toast, and offered up a short Q&A. I was pleasantly surprised to see my makeup didn’t look too shabby in our snapshot, and I even got her to sign my copy of A Place of Yes!
Many of you know that meeting Bethenny has been a dream of mine, especially since moving to New York City. I’ve admired Bethenny for a long time for her perseverance in business and in her personal life. I believe she is one of the most savvy, strong, and saucy entrepreneurs in the business world, and love her or hate her, Bethenny’s no-BS, ball-busting approach has proved to be wildly successful. Her book, A Place of Yes, was incredibly inspirational and transformative for me, and I would highly recommend it to anyone (in fact, if you need a copy, hit me up – I keep about ten on hand just to give out to others).
If you want to be the first to know about all things Skinnygirl or if live in the NYC area and want a chance to meet Bethenny at events in the future, be sure to join the Skinnygirl Tastemakers.
Crave, a verb:
1. To long for; want greatly, desire eagerly
2. To require; need
The routine has become second nature to us. We open our Facebook page, Twitter app, Instagram feed, Pinterest board, we start scrolling, and we click, click, click away at that little Like button as something passes by that strikes our fancy. In what feels like a matter of minutes, an hour passes, we close the tab or window or app, and we resume our day. But what happens to all the Likes? Just as quickly as we endorse a photo, article, video, we forget. Where does all our interest go? Is it really that fleeting? Or are we so overloaded with things we Like that the next time we visit our accounts, we hastily move on to the next interesting thing?
Call me a virtual hoarder, but I compile my Likes. I visit my activity log on Facebook, view posts I’ve liked on Instagram, scroll through my favorites on Twitter, and look through my likes on Pinterest. And in a much less robotic and more engaged manner, I extract the information I actually like and bookmark it in a folder called Cravings. Here are some of the most recent things I crave:

Hello readers! In case you haven’t been following along with me on Instagram, I just got back from a beautiful five-day, six-night trip to Mexico celebrating five years with my man. Now I’m back just in time to continue my fiesta with Cinco de Mayo!
There are three essentials for any Mexican celebration: booze, food, and a festive ensemble. This may seem like a recipe for any party, so let’s spice things up a little bit.
Of course you can never go wrong with a basic cerveza or margarita on Cinco de Mayo, but Bethenny Frankel has some tips to enhance your Skinnygirl cocktail. Heat up your margarita by muddling some chopped jalapeno slices in the shaker or sweeten your margarita with some frozen berries. Eating out tonight? I perfected how to order a skinny margarita on my recent trip to Mexico. Start with clear tequila or tequila blanco. Ask for the tequila blanco on the rocks with a splash of lime juice, orange liquor, and soda water. Like your margarita a little sweeter? Ask for a splash of Sprite or other lemon/lime soda instead of soda water! No matter what your booze of choice tonight, always remember to drink like a lady!
We’re all pretty familiar with classic Mexican fare: guacamole, queso fundido, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and so on. When it comes to dessert we think of classics like tres leches cake or churros, but in the spirit of putting a new spin on things this Cinco de Mayo I’m sharing a recipe for Mexican Hot Chocolate Cookies with a Kick courtesy of food blogger and New York Times best-selling author Bakerella.
1½ cups flour
½ cup cocoa powder
¾ tsp. baking soda
½ tsp. salt
4 tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. cayenne pepper
½ cup unsalted butter
1½ cups sugar
2 tsp. Mexican vanilla
1¼ cup bittersweet chocolate chips
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. In one bowl mix flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and cayenne using a wire whisk.
3. In another bowl cream butter and sugar. Then add eggs and vanilla and mix til combined.
4. Add flour mixture in two portions until just combined. Then stir in chocolate chips.
5. Place balls of dough on baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes.
*Yields approximately 3 dozen cookies
Finally, the moment we’ve all been waiting for – the fashion! I’m obsessed with Anthropologie’s Mexican inspired May look book. There is one ensemble that is my particular favorite, and even better, the key pieces are all under $100. After just visiting Mexico, I can assure you this would be a go-to look for a day in the city or a night on the town. The crucial article of clothing in this outfit is the sheer fringe pullover. This is a must-have for the beach breeze in Mexico. By now you also know I can’t resist a classic black and white look, and this one is pure perfection. The only addition I would make to this ensemble would be to brighten it up with some jewelry. Accessorizing this little black look with a pop of color adds just the fun and festive touch for your next fiesta!
ATTAIN the Look:
It’s Thursday, which means it’s practically the weekend. By now, everyone is gearing up for the Big Game on Sunday. I don’t personally have an allegiance to either team playing in the Super Bowl this Sunday, so I’m just looking to stay cute, comfy, and warm while enjoying some food, booze, and quality time with a few friends. I’d venture to say many other fashionistas out there share my sentiments. In case your man has roped you into hosting a party at your place, here are a few easy ways to have a stylish Super Bowl.
CUTE + COMFY + WARM
I joined Polyvore almost four years ago when it had only about 6 million monthly unique visitors. Now the social commerce site has nearly tripled its monthly unique visitors, and I’m thinking I need to get back on board. So, I decided to start with a set for the Super Bowl. The Broncos and Seahawks share a common team color: Navy. For all the fashionistas out there like me who aren’t rooting for a particular team, I’m suggesting you keep it neutral with navy to avoid any unnecessary comments or accusations from die hard football fellas. If you are a Broncos or Seahawks fan, add some orange or green to these outfits and you’ll be good to go!

If you’re looking for a serious crowd pleaser that’s both healthy and delicious, look no further. This is it! The first time my man and I made this recipe we knew it would become a staple of our party tray or lazy weekend afternoons.
