I decided to take most of the weekend off from New York Fashion Week, but as well all know, fashion never sleeps.
Social media is a great way to follow along with fashion week and keep up with the must-see looks and trends. So, for the past couple days I have been following along with NYFW through some of my favorite fashion sources on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Instragam is a wonderful platform to get a full-circle glimpse into the fashion shows from styling backstage to the final walk. Although fashion week is first and foremost about the apparel in the upcoming collections, there is a great deal of time and energy put into each and every show from model selection to catwalk choreography to hair and makeup and countless things in between. Some of my most beloved beauty brands have been lucky enough to work with some famed designers on styling their shows. So, I’ve complied a number of Instagram images to showcase the highlights from the weekend: Day 3 and Day 4 of NYFW F/W 2014 from backstage to the runway!
Tibi’s beauty look consisted of a bold Bordeaux lip by Bobbi Brown, a unique mini Mohawk braid by Aveda, and nude nails with a touch of sparkle. The Fall 2014 collection features chunky layered looks in both soft pastels and bold hues. The menswear-inspired sweaters and outerwear look so lush and inviting for the cool weather months
Herve Leger’s beauty look featured a dramatic eye, a pop of color in a high pony by Bumble and Bumble, and a nude nail by Essie. The Fall 2014 highlights a balance of fitted silhouettes and movement in an array of colors from neons to blush tones to nudes.
Derek Lam’s beauty look showcased a deep smokey eye and a soft pink lip stain by Estee Lauder and a nude nails. The Fall 2014 collection is a mix of sporty yet chic over-sized menswear inspired ensembles and feminine yet structured looks. There is also a variety of color in the collection with both warm earthy tones and pops of pastel.
DIANE VON FURSTENBERG
The Diane Von Furstenberg show was my must-see show of the weekend. The Belgian American fashion designer is celebrating a milestone year commemorating her iconic wrap dress, which is her signature look that jump started her career in the fashion industry forty years ago at the young age of 26! During the pre-show, Diane Von Furstenberg explained the inspiration behind the famed wrap dress: the ballerina wrap sweater. In honor of the wrap dress and its inspiration, the beauty look for her Fall 2014 show, Bohemian Wrapsody, was ballet inspired makeup and hair buns. Before the show, the designer encouraged her models to “be strong, feel sexy, be you, and smile.” The DVF brand truly embodies my goal for 2014 to FEEL GOOD and LOOK GOOD.
The show kicked off with a number of black and white looks in classic DVF patterns. My favorite neutral piece is the black and tan fur jacket featured above. The rest of the Fall 2014 collection consisted of rich jewel tones in a number of iconic DVF prints and wrap styles. The show concluded with a special and memorable finale as each model took the runway in a gold wrap dress. Next the models congregated onstage with St. Vincent, who provided live music for the show as part of the AmexUnstagged partnership. As the models danced to the music, Diane Von Furstenberg hit the catwalk then joined the models and the band for a gold confetti filled finale. I think it’s safe to say that this show ended with the “happiness and joy of life” that DVF intended.
Get Ready for This Flagship Store
If you’re a die-hard Mary Kate and Ashley fan like I am, you better have a seat. The Row is set to open it’s flagship store in Los Angeles this Spring. The fashion forward twins will be designing the interior of the space on Melrose Place with their impeccable style. If you live in the LA area or plan to visit there next Spring, you must add this to your shopping itinerary!
Cashmere You Can Afford This Season
If you’ve invested in a classic cashmere sweater you remember what an essential it has become to your winter wardrobe. However, you also remember how you couldn’t eat for a week after you purchased it. What if I said you could buy a cashmere sweater this season without breaking the bank? A new e-commerce site, Ivory Row, is making this cold weather must-have accessible to those fashionistas on a budget. So, when we say these sweaters are reasonable, how reasonable are we actually talking here? The sweaters will range from approximately $175-$275, which is about half the price of your typical piece of cashmere. Regardless, this is definitely still an investment piece, but believe me, it’s well worth the money!
This Online Retailer Has Gone Brick and Mortar
We saw Rent the Runway making major changes last month with the launch of its plus size line. Well, the brand has got even more in store for us. They are opening their first brick and mortar showroom in the Henri Bendel Fifth Avenue store in New York City. The boutique will offer personal stylists and of course the option to try on the dresses before renting. The company’s plans don’t stop there. They’ve set their sites into turning this showroom into a full out runway experience with talk of complementary nail, makeup, and other beauty services. I cannot wait to check this out on my next trip to NYC!
The Perfect Collaboration for the Perfect Stocking-Stuffer
One of the ultimate brands of basics is teaming up with a popular LA-based hair accessories brand for a holiday collection. Splendid has released a sneak peek of their collaboration with Emi-Jay Inc., and I cannot wait to stock up on these adorable hair ties for the holiday season! What a perfect stocking-stuffer or present-topper!
The Next Designer Breaking into Beauty
You may remember Tory Burch as the most recent designer to launch a beauty line just last month. Come January 2014, clothing designer Derek Lam will join with long line of designers that have crossed over into the cosmetic line. The initial collection will include a five-piece makeup set of “after-five essentials” that will be enclosed in a clutch designed by Lam himself. The whole package will retail for $85, which I personally think is pretty darn reasonable!
This Iconic Lingerie Company is Getting Sporty
Ladies, just when you thought Victoria’s Secret couldn’t get any better, it is! They’re launching an athletic line this month! I cannot wait to check out this collection, if for no other reason than for the promise of sports bras that are likely to actually support a larger chest! With this highly anticipated line, expect functionality and classic Victoria’s Secret style. Check with your local store to inquire about the debut date for Victoria’s Secret Sport and The World’s Best Sports Bras.
“Something New” for New Brides
Recently, one of my best friends got engaged and invited me to be her maid of honor, so I’ve got bridal on the brain! I became obsessed with designer Erin Fetherston after seeing her Spring 2014 presentation at New York Fashion Week, and now she’s releasing a bridal lingerie line to launch this Spring! The designer teamed up with lingerie verterans, Cosabella, to create the collection, which will include bras, panties, and lacey frocks. Prices will range from $20-$240, so no matter what your wedding budget you can snatch up one of these feminine, sexy undergarments!
P.S. Not a new bride? Like me and part of the wedding party? Just got a good friend getting married? Have a lingerie shower to go to? These little numbers would make the perfect gift for any bride!
Be the First to Buy This Up and Comer’s Designs at H&M
H&M’s most recent collaboration is with 27-year old up and coming designer Minju Kim. Kim is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium. She scored the coveted honor of creating an H&M collection after winning the academy’s annual design competition this year. Just think, you could be one of the first to own this designer’s original work, a bonus for when she makes it big!
This Luxury Brand is Adding Shoes to Its Collection
Thai-American fashion designer Thakoon will be adding shoes to his Spring 2014 line. The collection will start with three styles for Spring and is set to expand into a full shoe line in Fall 2014. Expect to add these shoes to your holiday wish list next year. They’re going to be pricey for a girl on a budget!
And This Shoe Company is Launching a Clothing Line
Vans is known for their iconic sneakers. Now the shoe company is venturing back into the apparel world. The brand is set to launch a clothing and accessories line for Spring 2014. The collection will remain true to the company’s laid back, punk image with a fashion flare. Prepare for this line to be reasonably priced and accessible for the every-girl!
