The official start of summer is merely eleven days away. We can already see the days getting longer, sunnier, and warmer. We’re going on vacations to the beach, lake, and mountains. We’re spending more time at concerts, festivals, poolside parties, or maybe just on our own porch. All of this outdoor activity is why the essential summer accessory is sunglasses. Sunglasses are a fun way to complete an outfit, and they can certainly make us feel more comfortable on a day when the sun is beating down and bright. However, sunglasses are more than a fashion accessory. They’re actually essential to our eye health as well. Just like applying sunscreen or at least SPF face moisturizer and lip balm are (or should be!) part of your summer beauty routine, so should putting on a pair of sunglasses before you leave the house. Sunglasses are the season’s ultimate fashion meets function accessory!
The first priority when choosing a pair of sunglasses is making sure they block 99% of UVA and UVB rays. This means you need to ditch the $10 sunglasses from Target or Forever 21. However, designer sunglasses can be expensive, like $100+ to $200+ expensive. For those of you out there who seem to have developed a bad habit of sitting on, breaking, or losing your sunglasses, this sounds like a scary investment. However, you can find quality, UV ray blocking sunglasses for a more reasonable price if you shop around and find a good deal. Well, today I’ve done a little leg work for you whether you’re looking to invest in a more pricey pair of sunglasses or looking for a deal on a designer pair.
THE ASPIRATIONAL LOOK
Today marks the launch of the highly anticipated eyewear collaboration between American fashion model Karlie Kloss and the eyewear powerhouse Warby Parker. The 70’s inspired collection co-designed by Kloss includes three limited edition styles that come in at $145 each. With these particular designer glasses, you can feel a bit better about your investment. Warby Parker has a buy a pair, give a pair policy. For every pair of glasses they sell, they distribute a pair to someone in need. Plus, with this particular collaborative collection, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Edible Schoolyard NYC, a nonprofit organization who partners with public schools to give children the knowledge and tools to make healthy choices and change the way they eat for life. Shop here.
Warby Parker uses polycarbonate for all of its lenses, which offers 100% UV protection.
THE ATTAINABLE LOOK
My favorite fashion duo, twin designers Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen recently won the Council of Fashion Designers of America Accessories Designer of the Year award for their high fashion line, The Row. The sunglasses from this brand range from about $200 to a whopping $500. However, their more affordable brand, Elizabeth and James, offers some slightly more attainable options. Today through Thursday, June 12, you can snag a pair of Elizabeth and James sunglasses for a serious steal on Hautelook. The Elizabeth and James Eyewear event on Hautelook kicked off today with styles up to 83% off retail price, starting as low as $46. Shop here.
Elizabeth and James sunglasses offer 100% UV protection.
Instagram is arguably one of the fastest growing social media platforms. On this week’s episode of HBO’s Silicon Valley, I learned that Instagram actually began as a project similar to Foursquare that focused on checking in and location based social networking, then it pivoted and revised its focus to mobile photography. Instagram has been a particularly significant platform for the fashion community. From LIKEtoKNOW:IT, a service that allows you to LIKE photos on Instagram and receive ready to shop product links directly to your inbox, to Vogue’s impromptu Instagram fashion shoot aka promotion for the Met Gala and the Anna Wintour Costume Center’s Charles James: Beyond Fashion exhibit, the fashion community has found ways to fully utilize Instagram’s features. The platform is gaining such popularity in the fashion industry, the Council of Fashion Designer’s of America (CFDA) named their first ever Fashion Instagrammer of the Year to be the official CFDA Instagram correspondent for the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards (which were last night, btw!). You can find plenty of lists floating around of the most stylish Instagram accounts you need to follow now. These mainly consist of bloggers, models, editors, designers, and the like. But what about the awesome Instagrammers who are flying under the radar? Well, I think I’ve found three of them. Here are 3 unsuspectingly stylish Instagram accounts you should check out!
Maybe I’m weird and creepy for being obsessed with a 14-year-old’s Instagram. Maybe I’m just partial to anything and everything relating to AMC’s Mad Men. But really, is it just me or does this girl have amazing style? Chanel + Chuck Taylor + Miu Miu… need I say more?
You may know Bethany Watson by her voice as one of the leading radio personalities of the nationally syndicated Elvis Duran Morning Show. Bethany is a born and raised Wisconsin gal (shout out to all my Mad Town ladies) living in NYC. Of all my unsuspectingly stylish Instagrammers, Bethany rocks the most attainable, everygirl looks – most recently she prided herself in finding the amazing Alice + Olivia pumps (pictured above) at a local consignment store for $60!
Busy Philipps is my all time favorite person to follow on Instagram. In addition to showcasing her amazing fashion sense, she posts tons of awesome pictures of her life in LA and some of the best throwback photos. This major celeb’s Instagram is down to earth, totally relatable, and seriously stylish.

The Controversial Campaign: Miley Cyrus for Marc Jacobs
I have a few disclaimers before I delve into the sensitive subject of Miley Cyrus and the Marc Jacobs Spring 2014 ad campaign. 1. I believe that ad campaigns are for models, and I do not advocate singers, actresses, or other such celebrities staring in ad campagins. 2. I am begrudgingly discussing Miley Cyrus on my blog for the third time. 3. All of this aside, I’m here to explore fashion, and as much as I hate to admit it, I think Miley Cyrus looks fantastic in the Marc Jacobs Spring 2014 campaign. I know I may be a little biased as a long time Marc Jacobs fan, but I think it’s no surprise that Miley and Marc have teamed up (again). The two have worked together in the past from their collaborative skin tee supporting the NYU Skin Cancer Institute to the countless Marc Jacobs ensembles Miley has sported a various events, such as the Met Ball. And, quite frankly, the bizarre sense of style Miley has adopted over the past year or two is completely well suited for a quirky Marc Jacobs campaign. These two seem like a match made in heaven to me! However, aside from the sheer controversy over Miley herself, there is also buzz surrounding the photographer of the campaign. Juergen Teller is known for shooting Marc Jacob’s ads, but he allegedly refused to shoot Miley, according to Women’s Wear Daily (WWD). Thus the whispers are spinning: is Marc’s loyalty to Miley greater than his loyalty to his tried and true photographer? Is it just me or are we making a mountain out of a mole hill here?
DVF: Wrapping Women Since 1974
Saturday, January 11 marked the opening of an exhibition forty years in the making: Diane Von Furstenberg Journey of a Dress. If you live in the LA area or have plans to go to LA between now and April 1, you absolutely must add this exhibit to your calendar. If you don’t, maybe you should book your next vaca – this display is not to be missed. Over four decades ago, DVF realized the American Dream at the young age of 26 by designing a modest knitted jersey wrap dress. Little did she know that her simple, feminine creation would have a profound and lasting impact on women’s fashion. Journey of a Dress features 200 mannequins clad in DVF wrap dresses along with countless photographs, magazine covers, and portraits of DVF herself plus much more. If you can’t make it to LA to experience this amazing event, head to the DVF site to share your wrap story, from first dates, to first jobs, special moments, and everything in between!
Say hello to the newest board member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America: Ashley Olsen. It seems like just yesterday Mary Kate won the Womenswear Designer of the Year award from the CFDA. Just last month, Ashley received the coveted and prestigious invitation to join the CFDA’s board. I may be partial to the Olsen twins because I’ve basically been obsessed with them since I was born, but I think it’s undeniable that these girls are on fire in the fashion world. This is a true milestone in this actress-turned-designer’s career in fashion. In addition to Ashley Olsen, Prabal Gurung and Deborah Lloyd of Kate Spade will be joining the ranks with over 400 of the most accomplished designers in the industry such as Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauran, and CFDA President, Diane Von Furstenberg.
It’s well known that Lady Gaga has an affinity for a particular high profile fashion designer. Gaga sported some vintage pieces from this designer’s archives back in 2011 for her “Edge of Glory” video, she devoted a song to this designer on her latest album, Artpop, and this designer created the ensembles for Gaga’s third tour, Born This Way Ball . Now, she will be the face of this designer’s next campaign. You guessed it, Lady Gaga is the new face of Versace.
Pull out your reading list and mark your calendars. The next biography to add to your library will be Vivienne Westwood’s. Whether you’re a die hard fan of Westwood’s modern punk and new wave fashion or whether you only know that she designed Carrie Bradshaw’s wedding dress in the Sex and the City movie, you’re not going to want to miss this book. This 72 year old designer has lived a captivating and colorful life while cultivating an extraordinary career and making a major name for herself in fashion. May your excitement and fascination build over the next year. This biography is set to release in October 2014.
