Black and White

You know those days where you go to your closet and think, I have nothing to wear? We’ve all had them. In my years of building a wardrobe I have come to realize there is one way to avoid the I-have-nothing-to-wear clothing dilemma for good. The answer is black and white.

No matter what the occasion or season, you can never go wrong with a black and white look. Having strong black and white pieces in your wardrobe makes composing an outfit even on your worst I-have-nothing-to-wear day a lot more painless.

Consider the fundamental articles of clothing in your closet:

1. T-Shirt

2. Blouse

3. Blazer

4. Jeans

5. Skirt

6. Dress

Do you own each of these in black and white? The key to building a solid wardrobe is a strong foundation of basic pieces. If you own black and white options of these six essential items, you’re already on your way to a well-built wardrobe. If you still need to add some of these necessities to your closet, here’s some inspiration:

Think of these as your go-to garments whether you’re feeling fun, fancy, or frustrated. Black and white looks good on any mood, and in your busy life of balancing work and play, you can’t afford to spend hours composing outfits in your closet. So, the next time you find yourself saying, I have nothing to wear, go straight to your black and white basics and get going with the rest of your day!

Highlights from the Weekend: Day 3 and Day 4 of NYFW F/W 2014

I decided to take most of the weekend off from New York Fashion Week, but as well all know, fashion never sleeps.

Social media is a great way to follow along with fashion week and keep up with the must-see looks and trends. So, for the past couple days I have been following along with NYFW through some of my favorite fashion sources on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Instragam is a wonderful platform to get a full-circle glimpse into the fashion shows from styling backstage to the final walk. Although fashion week is first and foremost about the apparel in the upcoming collections, there is a great deal of time and energy put into each and every show from model selection to catwalk choreography to hair and makeup and countless things in between. Some of my most beloved beauty brands have been lucky enough to work with some famed designers on styling their shows. So, I’ve complied a number of Instagram images to showcase the highlights from the weekend: Day 3 and Day 4 of NYFW F/W 2014 from backstage to the runway!

Tibi’s beauty look consisted of a bold Bordeaux lip by Bobbi Brown, a unique mini Mohawk braid by Aveda, and nude nails with a touch of sparkle. The Fall 2014 collection features chunky layered looks in both soft pastels and bold hues. The menswear-inspired sweaters and outerwear look so lush and inviting for the cool weather months

Herve Leger’s beauty look featured a dramatic eye, a pop of color in a high pony by Bumble and Bumble, and a nude nail by Essie. The Fall 2014 highlights a balance of fitted silhouettes and movement in an array of colors from neons to blush tones to nudes.

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG

The Diane Von Furstenberg show was my must-see show of the weekend. The Belgian American fashion designer is celebrating a milestone year commemorating her iconic wrap dress, which is her signature look that jump started her career in the fashion industry forty years ago at the young age of 26! During the pre-show, Diane Von Furstenberg explained the inspiration behind the famed wrap dress: the ballerina wrap sweater. In honor of the wrap dress and its inspiration, the beauty look for her Fall 2014 show, Bohemian Wrapsody, was ballet inspired makeup and hair buns. Before the show, the designer encouraged her models to “be strong, feel sexy, be you, and smile.” The DVF brand truly embodies my goal for 2014 to FEEL GOOD and LOOK GOOD.

The show kicked off with a number of black and white looks in classic DVF patterns. My favorite neutral piece is the black and tan fur jacket featured above. The rest of the Fall 2014 collection consisted of rich jewel tones in a number of iconic DVF prints and wrap styles. The show concluded with a special and memorable finale as each model took the runway in a gold wrap dress. Next the models congregated onstage with St. Vincent, who provided live music for the show as part of the AmexUnstagged partnership. As the models danced to the music, Diane Von Furstenberg hit the catwalk then joined the models and the band for a gold confetti filled finale. I think it’s safe to say that this show ended with the “happiness and joy of life” that DVF intended.

4 Sites Where You Can Always Snag a Deal

New Year, New Spin on my Deal of the Day: This year, in addition to alerting you to awesome deals you just can’t pass up, I’m going to give you tips on how to get a deal every time you shop. Today, I’m going to start by sharing 4 sites where you can always snag a deal. As you may have noticed my resolution for the New Year is to make small changes to create a big impact. So, I urge you to make a small change to your routine to save big! All it takes is a little pre-planning for you to take advantage of some stellar deals.

Ladies, we all need beauty products, and when we’re running low on our favorite foundation or must-have moisturizer, our first impulse is to swing by the mall on the way home from work and restock at any cost. Let me tell you, you’re missing out! One of the best changes I’ve made in my beauty routine is buying beauty online. There are lots of benefits to buying beauty online including FREE samples, rewards points, and other online exclusives and incentives all without paying any extra for shipping and with the convenience of never making an extra trip to the store. Four of my favorite beauty sites to buy from are Sephora, Ulta, Bobbi Brown, and Bumble and Bumble. Each one of these sites offers FREE samples with every order and FREE shipping with every order over a certain minimum in addition to a NEW exclusive or incentive each week.

Ulta and Sephora are both meccas for any beauty essential you could possibly need. Ulta typically offers FREE shipping on orders over $50 and 3 FREE samples with every order, either fragrance, skincare, or a variety pack. Sephora also regularly offers FREE shipping for orders over $50 and 3 FREE samples. However, they provide a bit more customization with their samples by letting you select 3 samples of your choice from a selection of 12 products. The deals at Sephora don’t stop there! Become a Beauty Insider to accrue points toward FREE products and take advantage of an additional promotion at checkout with every order.

Two of my favorite beauty brands always have amazing incentives to order online. Both Bobbi Brown and Bumble and Bumble offer FREE samples and FREE shipping with every order. These sites change their online exclusives weekly and sometimes daily. Right now, Bobbi Brown is offering FREE Shipping and a choice of 2 FREE winter skincare duos on orders over just $30! And today Bumble and Bumble is offering 3 FREE minis and FREE shipping on orders over just $25, plus 2 additional FREE samples on orders over $50! As if you needed another reason to shop these brands, each of these sites offers yet another ultra convenient incentive: an auto-replenish feature!

So, here’s the first tip: don’t wait until your beauty necessities are completely gone to think about restocking. Take a little time to plan ahead. When you notice your signature scent or everyday eyeliner is beginning to run low, start to scour the sites daily to seek out the samples that best suit you and your beauty routine. Maybe you’ll find a sample of a product you already use and love. This could be prefect for traveling or slipping in your purse for a night on the town. Maybe you’ll find a sample of a product you’ve wanted to try. What better way to test drive a new product before investing in a full size container? When you see the samples you like, you’ll be ready to place your order! Next, don’t be deterred by minimum order amounts to gain FREE shipping. Beauty products are expensive, so it’s likely that just one will allow you to meet the minimum required for FREE shipping. If not, follow my second tip: try to stock up on multiple products in one order. This tip also requires a little planning and forethought, but it will help you avoid shipping costs and it’s easy to do on sites like Sephora and Ulta where you can order for your hair, skin, and nails all in one place!
