Who to Follow for NYFW Coverage

During previous New York Fashion Weeks I’ve been practically handcuffed to my computer all day, every day, watching every single show and attempting to catch every moment of social media coverage. This year, I do not have that luxury. Everything is falling during NYFW: freelance projects, workshops, styling photo shoots, travel, and some big happenings on this blog. On top of that I’m bogged down with a cold. So, for this NYFW I’m relying on some key sources to stay up to date on the fashion action. Thus far I’ve discovered four that have been particularly helpful to keep me caught up on Day 1 and 2. If I discover any other NYFW gems along the way, perhaps you’ll see a follow up post, but for now, here’s who to follow for NYFW coverage!

MICHAEL KORS

michael kors nyfw fw 2014 runway

Michael Kors is an American fashion designer known for designing classic American sportswear for women. Like many other American fashion designers, his career has followed the path of the American dream. Kors first began designing apparel as a teenager and sold his designs out of his parents basement in Long Island, New York. He attended the Fashion Institute of Technology for nine months before dropping out and taking a job at a boutique that gave him a small portion of the store to sell his designs. It was there that the fashion director of Bergdorf Goodman discovered his work and invited him to show his collection to the buyers at Bergdorf. As they say, the rest is history! His Fall 2014 collection stays true to the brand with a mix of feminine and menswear inspired pieces. The palette of the collection consists of neutrals, neutrals, and more neutrals with the predominant hues of muddy gray and taupe. Some of my favorite looks from the line are the chunky ombre sweaters and fur layering pieces.

NANETTE LEPORE

nanette nyfw fw 2014 runway

Nanette Lepore is an American fashion designer with a youthful and feminine style. Her designs are typically bold, colorful, and flowy and feature evocative prints and contemporary silhouettes with a touch of bohemian flair. Today, she had grown into a lifestyle brand for women that includes apparel as well as swimwear, accessories, and fragrance. Her Fall 2014 collection reflects the overarching aesthetic of the brand with styles that are both modern and girly. A few of the standout looks from the line are the all-black suit with the magenta shoes that add a pop of color and the light airy dresses with asymmetric hemlines. Within the collection there is a lot of detailed texture play and interesting accessories from cross-body bags to color-blocked, waist-cinching belts. Overall, the line seems very wearable, accessible, and fresh!

ANNA SUI

anna sui nyfw fw 2014 runway

Anna Sui is an American fashion designer whose hip, exuberant, and sometimes eccentric designs are inspired by her depth of cultural knowledge. For over three decades, Anna Sui’s attention to detail and dedication to creativity have contributed to the success of her global lifestyle brand, which consists of apparel, accessories, cosmetics, and fragrance. Her Fall 2014 collection reflects the brand by combining styles and silhouettes from different eras with modern patterns, textures, and colors. In classic Anna Sui fashion there is a great deal of mixing and matching of various prints and fabrics that all seem to have a touch of vintage inspiration.

REMEMBER! I’ll be watching many of the shows streaming LIVE on the Mercedes Benz site and LIVE Tweeting during the shows. After the show ends, I’ll post a clip of the final walk on my Instagram, so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Instagram @cmcross (or in the right sidebar!) for all things NYFW.

TORY BURCH

Tory Burch is an American fashion designer who infuses her own feminine and eclectic style into her collections. Her brand has been known for its color and iconic prints since the label began in 2004. Most recently, the designer expanded her lifestyle brand to include a beauty line in the Fall of 2013. Today, Women’s Wear Daily broke the news that Burch is rumored to expand the brand further by branching out into menswear, men’s accessories, and active wear later this year. The newest addition to the Tory Burch team is the former senior vice president of men’s design at Coach, Jeffrey Uhl, who is expected to oversee the upcoming men’s line. The Fall 2014 collection showcased today is filled with rich fabrics and prints. According to In Style magazine, the inspiration for the collection was a Samurai warrior, which is certainly reflected in the colors, detail work, and overall tone of the collection. Some of my favorite aspects of the collection are the perfectly placed pops of metallic, leather, and sparkle. And, of course, the accessories were simply swoon-worthy from the elegant knee-high boots to the fur handbags.

MARC BY MARC JACOBS

Marc Jacobs is an American fashion designer known for his wild use of colors and patterns and his unflinching efforts to push the boundaries within the industry. His Fall 2014 collection delivered just that with a mix of bold patterns and unusual silhouettes. The collection is distinctly menswear inspired with both boxy styles and prints and lots of layering. However, there are feminine touches, namely the large waist-cinching belts and over-sized bows all in the style of punk schoolgirl chic. Although Jacobs has enlisted two new designers for the secondary line, Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier, the show was classic Marc Jacobs with the layout of a winding maze for the models to traverse and dramatic music setting the tone. (Check out a birds-eye view on my Instagram.)

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

oscar de la renta nyfw fw 2014 runway

Oscar de la Renta is a Puerto Rican, Dominican American fashion designer behind the famed fashion house that has dressed countless leading figures for the past several decades. De La Renta is particularly known for his formal attire from red carpet gowns to evening wear. The Fall 2014 collection includes a number of full length dresses as well as cocktail gowns, separates, outerwear, and accessories. For me, this was the standout show of the day. I could barely choose which six looks to feature because I loved each and every ensemble. This brand and subsequently this Fall 2014 collection epitomizes class, femininity, and timelessness. Although every piece of the collection is nearly flawless, I narrowed it down to these six looks as my absolute favorites for their wearability and accessibility. Oscar de la Renta is one of those brands that the “average girl” can find unattainable. However, I believe each of these looks pictured are ensembles that any girl can draw inspiration from in her Fall 2014 wardrobe.

CAROLINA HERRERA

carolina herrera nyfw fw 2014 runway

Carolina Herrera is a Venezuelan American fashion designer known for her elegant and graceful personal style. Her dramatic, feminine, and refined designs have been influential in the fashion industry for over three decades. The Fall 2014 collection features a playful mix of textures and patterns. There is a perfect balance of geometric prints and solids as well as pops of fur and sparkle. All of the silhouettes are distinctly feminine from dresses to separates. Some of my favorite ensembles from the collection are the warm gray layered looks and the stunning printed maxi dresses.

MILLY

milly nyfw fw 2014 runwayMilly is a contemporary fashion brand founded by American fashion designer Michelle Smith in 2001. While studying fashion, Smith worked at the Hermes boutique in Manhattan, and after graduating, she wrote the President of Hermes requesting an internship at the fashion house’s Paris headquarters. Smith’s request was granted, and she became the first American employee to be sent to Paris to work with Hermes. Needless to say this adventure jump started the designer’s career, and after spending three years in Paris she returned to the United States to establish her own brand. The Fall 2014 collection epitomizes the brand’s bold, feminine, and edgy aesthetic with an array of fabrics and textures. The palette of the collection consists of gorgeous neutrals with lots of fur and flounce! The all black looks have been the best I’ve seen in a Fall 2014 collection so far, however my absolute favorite piece is the gold leopard print skirt (pictured in the top middle above).
